Identity Theft Protection

Last reviewed 2026-08-30

Identity theft protection services watch for signs that someone else is using your personal information — opening credit accounts, filing tax returns, or using your Social Security number — and alert you so you can respond quickly, rather than discovering the damage months later.

What's typically monitored

  • New credit inquiries and account openings under your name
  • Your Social Security number appearing in new-account or dark-web contexts
  • Public records changes, such as new addresses filed under your identity
  • Some services also monitor for your data appearing in known breach dumps

How this differs from credit monitoring alone

Credit monitoring alone typically watches one or more credit bureaus for changes to your credit file. Identity theft protection is broader, often layering in dark-web and public-record monitoring on top of credit alerts, plus support for resolving fraud once it's detected.

What happens after an alert

A monitoring alert tells you something changed — it doesn't undo the change. From there, you typically need to contact the institution involved, place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the credit bureaus, and, if a service includes it, use their restoration support to help work through the process.

Where this overlaps with other tools

Identity theft protection and personal data removal are complementary: removal reduces how much of your information is publicly exposed in the first place, while monitoring catches misuse of information that's already out there, including from past breaches you had no control over.

Frequently asked questions

Does identity theft protection prevent identity theft?

It doesn't prevent it from being attempted, but it shortens the time between misuse occurring and you finding out, which limits the damage.

Is credit monitoring the same as identity theft protection?

Credit monitoring is usually one component of a broader identity theft protection service, which may also cover dark-web and public-record monitoring.

What should I do first if I get a fraud alert?

Contact the institution where the suspicious activity occurred, then consider a credit freeze with the major bureaus while you sort out the details.
