How to Protect a Windows PC From Malware

By Malware-Bytes.net Editorial Team · Published 2026-08-12 · Updated 2026-08-28

Ranked by real-world impact, security software is not first on this list. Updates and account hygiene are.

1. Keep Windows and browsers updated

Most exploit kits target flaws patched months earlier. Automatic updates close that window at no cost.

2. Secure the accounts, not just the PC

A password manager and two-factor authentication on email prevent the most damaging outcomes of an infection, because the attacker's next step is almost always account takeover.

3. Control what gets installed

  • Use a standard, non-administrator account for daily work
  • Download from vendor sites, not aggregator portals
  • Choose custom installation and untick bundled offers
  • Avoid cracked software entirely — it is a primary malware channel

4. Run one resident engine and scan periodically

Windows Security or a paid anti-malware tier, plus a weekly scan. See Malwarebytes security layers.

5. Back up so the worst case is survivable

One offline or versioned backup, tested once. If ransomware ever lands, that backup is the difference between an inconvenience and a loss.

6. Keep the system lean

Fewer startup programs and background utilities means fewer hiding places and a faster PC. If you like managing this in one place, Winhance handles startup entries and system tweaks without manual registry edits.

Frequently asked questions

Is a VPN malware protection?

No. A VPN encrypts your connection; it does not inspect or block malicious files.
